The Christmas lights at Regent Street and Oxford Street in London have been switched on at exactly the same time.

Canadian actor Jim Carrey was invited to flick the switch the Christmas lights on at 1815 GMT on Oxford Street. The event was themed around A Christmas Carol, authored by Charles Dickens.

Simultaneously, British actor Colin Firth was at the nearby Regent Street carrying the same task, while fellow actor Bob Hoskins led the London’s Christmas celebrations at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Led by Italian opera singer Andrea Bocelli and the St Paul’s Cathedral Choir, enthusiasts broke a new world record for the most singers performing a Christmas carol, all of which was shown live thanks to a series of large outdoor screens in Oxford Circus.

The switch-on of the Christmas lights event was scheduled to precede the Disney’s film world premiere at three London cinemas of A Christmas Carol, which features Jim Carrey in the leading role, as well as the involvement of both Colin Firth and Bob Hoskins.

For the 2008 Christmas event, the switch on of the lights was performed at Regent Street on November 6 and at Oxford Street on  November 12
.
Keeping with tradition, this year’s Christmas lights will be lit after sunset everyday day until January 6, 2010.
