Baby Panda popular with tourists

Posted on August 07, 2009

The recent news of the birth of a baby panda contributes to Thailand’s cultural capital tourism appeal. The historical city sees newcomers from allover lured by panda madness.

In a bid to cash in panda power, the zoo has built a new home for the bears at a cost of 60 million baht. The 580-square-metre building is the future home of the panda family, the zoo’s star attractions. The family consists of Xuang Xuang, Lin Hui and their baby cub, to be christened on August 12.

The structure boasts a dome and has separate sections for both pandas and visitors. The controlled temperature is maintained at -5 degrees Celsius to provide the bears with maximal comfort. The dome even possesses a snow terrace and a deck providing visitors with an observation point to view the pandas. The bears will be moved to a new home later this year.

But even now people can look inside the Snow Dome for a fee, which includes warm clothing, of 150 baht for adults and 100 baht for children. Each visitor is only permitted 15 minutes in the building.

The Chiang Mai Zoo is opened 9am to 5pm everyday.

Call the zoo at 66-53-221-179.
